Take It Up Yours Windows, I am now Open

After so many years of Windozing, I have now given up. I am switching to LInux (Ubuntu to be specific) forever. From OpenOffice to Firefox, from GIMP to Brasero, all Open Source.

I hereby pledge never to use Microsoft Windows unless absolutely required or forced to do so. All the required work like blogging/Social Networking/ <insert useless activity> will be done on Open Source Software. It is now my duty to spread awareness about OSS (Open Source Software). Richard Stallman is my God now.

I don’t know what was holding me back from switching to Heaven from Hell, but whatever it was, it has been killed by Windoze itself. Trouble shooting has been one thing on which I have spent too much time while using Windows (any version, doesn’t matter). Either there’s was a virus or a bug or one of the Windows nuisances . Sometimes it’s the guilt of using pirated software (excluding Windows). No doubt that the trouble shooting has made me understand my computer more than ever before but now that I can handle most hardware and software problems I think it is now time to bid goodbye to an old friend who has ruined things when they were of utmost importance.

I am going Open Source (no pun intended)

I am going Open Source (no pun intended)

I’m still getting used to Ubuntu 9.10 (for why read next paragraph). Finding software is a bit difficult since I am unaware of most of the things and communities/forums. Also since I don’t have to manually install Office every time I re-install Ubuntu, I am loving it. The system is more responsive, does not hang (at least not as often as windows), boots faster, does not have any virus and last but not not the least, it frees me of the guilt of using pirated software. It’s not that I am using Linux or Ubuntu for the first time, I have used it for testing purposes many times before but never thought of switching to it at that time. But this time I am

As to why I am using Karmic Koala and not Lucid Lynx: I don’t know why but my mouse and Keyboard freeze the moment I boot into Lucid Lynx. I have tried both fresh installation and upgrading from Karmic Koala but none helped. Apparently it is a bug and has been noticed by some other users too.

Until there is an official announcement by Canonical about this bug or someone comes up with a fix I will stick to Karmic Koala. Also, I might upgrade to Maverick Meerkat once it will release on 10.10.10.

If you are an Open Source Fanatic then please post some links as comments of some forums and/or websites from where I can get some add-ons and software.

Matrix Ecomm 2010

Have you ever been to an event in which every possible rule and restriction was put in place and then all of them were broken by the organizers themselves? Had you asked this question to me yesterday, I would have said no but today I say yes, I have been to an event like the one aforementioned.

Mount St. Mary’s School‘s annual symposium Matrix Ecomm was held on 20th-21st August 2010. See the invite here, though if you are color blind you may pass it. (if you interested in reading the whole post then you must have a look at the Matrix Ecomm’s invite, it would help you empathize with me and my fellow students who were (un)fortunate enough to attend the symposium.

Note: If you are susceptible to epileptic seizures please refrain from seeing the invite.

It’s not that their invite was bad, it was just an invite which you don’t feel like opening. So many colors, so many images..oh! God! To open the invite you need to  have a motive and a friend to support you while you are at it. Though no typos except one was found, the one which I found compensated for 50 typos. It was the third word of the invite and it was written in bold and apparently was in a size three times larger than the rest of the written material in the invite.

What follows is a full (and rather long) review of the event plus pointing out a few things in the invite.

Dear sir/maam

See the typo? Besides the fact that they forgot to add an apostrophe/ letter d (it could have been either ma’am or madam) they perhaps thought even a comma was not required after maam.

These are the rules for the Gaming event, Headshot (with no game in which you could get a headshot). Weird but interesting nevertheless.

Headshot

  • Participants have an option of bringing their own USB mouse not more than 3500 dpi (auto detect, driver installation will not be allowed)
  • Team have to be prepared for all Genres
  • Teams have to have a proper logo and clan name.

See people, we know you know what dpi is. You don’t need to show off your knowledge by writing anything. 3500? Seriously? My friend bought a mamba for gaming purposes (d’uh!) and you don’t want him to use it? I wonder why…And why the logo? Aditya spent an hour making it while they didn’t even use the logo. No auto detect? How will a participant use any mouse in that case?!

Anyway, our gamers had a talk with the organizers and they removed this restriction afterwards.

The gaming event was spread over 2 days with round 1 and 2 being day 1 while round 3 (finals) on the second day. I was not there the first day since the quiz or surprise event was on the second day. The gaming people qualified in day 1 and went on to grab second place on day 2. According to the schedule a gaming participant could take part in the surprise event as well since they were not clashing. The schedule however was changed afterwards (after day 1) with no official announcement whatsoever. Had to make changes in the teams since a gamer was supposed to come with me in the surprise event, off the computer. The actual gaming however ended before the commencement of the surprise event thus making me mad. Why did they change it in the first place?!

This is the event in which I went. It can also be considered the surprise event though it hasn’t been named so.

  • Matrix Mind Fields™ is the ultimate challenge testing technological prowess. The Mind Field will…….
  • Teams will comprise of 4 members. 2 on the computer and 2 for challenges off the computer.

I settled for off the computer since we were expecting quiz/crossword/banana/apple to come as the event. The on the computer guys were told that Video Editing et al could come. Since it was a surprise event we were not sure. The event got preponed though it started at the time it was supposed to be. We sat in front of a PC with Pentium 4, a 13 inch Samsung LCD (the smaller version of the TV LCD’s) and the user log-in screen with a password protected account on Windows. With nothing to do we started entering random passwords. Apparently every time we tried consecutively for the 6th time the PC used to hang and thus forcing us to restart it.

And the ™, really?

The rules were told (or rather changed). It was told (with my commentary in square brackets.)

All four participants have to sit on one computer [Er..Pardon me? What happened to the invite? Haven't you read it?]. There will be no off computer round [Ye lo, doob gayi bhais]. There will also be a treasure hunt. There are clues hidden in the school, you have to find them. It is time based. You have 20 minutes to solve the first clue. The team with the least time will win.

On the treasure hunt thing I went

Me: It is raining outside!

The Guy: I wanted to make it interesting, didn’t know it would rain.

Me: *hump*

After waiting for almost an hour we were given the password to log-in. It was shrek.

Another announcement:

You will be given clues which you have to solve and then proceed to the next clue. Total clues are 3. 2 on the computer and one for the treasure hunt. The clue you get will be based on your luck that is they can either really easy or really stuff. Hints will be given though it will add 10 minutes to your time [Sarcasm starts_Woot! That is awesome! I am so lucky! They don't test knowledge! They are testing luck! Awesome event]

Couldn’t it just be the same clue for everyone else? The competition would be equal like that! Needless to say, we got a clue about which we had no idea at all. (The game was Solitaire).

Matrix Ecomm

It took some time for our minds to register the fact that is was in fact a cheat (though it was apparent). The clue was simple. If you know it, do it if you don’t then die pressing combination of random keys hoping that the next permutation works. We did that. But failed at it and miserable at that too. We asked for a clue knowing that it would mean 20 minutes + 10 minutes penalty =30 minutes, virtually impossible for us to bounce back. The hint that we got was sarcasm starts _nothing short of amazing. It shed so much light that we realized that the answer had been in front of us all the time_sarcasm ends. The clue they gave us was:

It is a keyboard shortcut.

Need I say more?

Unable to complete the task we waited it to be given the next clue (the cheat is Alt+Shift+2). The next clue was

Matrix Ecomm

I remember G@ateway. Even it was on computer but it was workable and fun! Even though I didn’t win it I would remember it always! The clue (if you can call it clue) was not workable! Either you know it or you don’t. There is only one way of doing it. Though we were able to hide the data inside the image (by using “comment” after right clicking) since notepad editing rendered the image “not previewable” . It worked though it was not upto the standard of the organizers. Reason: We did not do it the way they wanted it to be done.

The guy who showed us how to do it used this trick (link given for the trick) and used WinRAR (a 3rd party software). Also it was mentioned that 3rd party software is not allowed. On this point the guy said

The guy: WinRAR is not 3rd party.

Me: Ermm. What?! WinRAR is 3rd party.

The guy: It comes with Windows.

Me: *Hump* Dude seriously?

The guy: Yes.

Me: No!

The guy: Fine, I’ll show you the trick with WinZip.

Me: *Waiting*

The guy: Since the original file is in .RAR format it is not opening with WinZip. But had I used WinZip earlier, it would have worked.

Me: We did hide the data though!

The guy: Not the way we wanted.

The trick in fact is pretty long. Requires CMD and is very long. In short not doable in surprise event. On the other hand the trick does not work without 3rd part software (WinRAR, 7Zip et al have to be used). See the trick here.

With that done, they gave us this:

C-A-L-Y-I-Q-E-S A-F-N

Tried to decipher it  but couldn’t. Asked for the key but it didn’t help because my mind was doing everything besides working. The answer was physics lab. Ran to the lab and were given this:

Come to us and we will give you knowledge. We are:

Teachers was a very sensible answer which Vaibhav gave but it was wrong. There we portraits of Scientists, Sir Isaac Newton and all. That was also turned down by one organizer. Sidharth finally found some magazines and there was this chit which had this written:

Back to square one

Must be reception. Ran like Usian Bolt (only a lot slower). No one was there so we started shouting for anyone who would give us the next clue. We got and rush back (bruised my knee when I slipped on the stairs, second floor). Ran back to the Computer lab. Only to be given given another clue

Open a file named “dafile” without using My Computer. Use CMD.

I said “Can we use explorer?” ;) “No” came the answer. These guys are obssesed with CMD! Command Prompt everywhere!

The extension was not told to us and later it was revealed that the file is in the D drive. FAIL!

I just can’t write anymore now (you must me thanking me for stopping :P ). The event just pissed me off. Even the quiz sucked. Worst ever. Questions out of nowhere and on top of it they even refused to acknowledge correct answers. The gaming though was organized very nicely by the Matrix Clan and even let us watch the event.

PS: The reason for such an abrupt ending is not tiredness (due to running around the school) but is the eagerness of pressing Publish button which took over me and forced me to publish it. Anyway, if you have survived the full post then congrats, you are one of the very few to do so.

iPhone or iPod touch not being recognised by iTunes?

iTunes is one software which I detest. Besides using oodles of memory on my not so amazing PC it tries to access my I-work-only-when-not-required Internet at every possible instance. It has a mind-bogglingly huge number of services and applications running in the background at all times (You can ‘end’ processes but that doesn’t serve the purpose in the long run). And on top of all these it doesn’t even allow the user to pause Firmware updates that one is downloading. The option for ‘pause’ is there but Apple forgot to add the resume button so iTunes starts the download again, from the very beginning.

iPhone or iPod touch not being recognised by iTunes?

Have you ever been greeted by these error messages? ;

Please Install Apple Application Support.

Apple Application Support was not found.

AppleMobileDeviceSupport was not found or is not running.

The Bonjour service is not running.

QuickTime needs to be repaired/re-installed.

<Insert error message which made you say “F*** YOU APPLE AND ITUNES!”>

It was around 15 days back when my iTunes refused to recognize my iPod touch (Windows was recognizing it but not iTunes). I was greeted by a pretty straight forward message “The iPod cannot be used because the apple mobile device support is not running”. I checked the processes to verify it. iTunes was correct,  apple mobile device support was not running. I went inside Common Files to run it but was unable to find the .exe file.

A little bit of Goggling told me that a re-installation should fix the problem. I did that (took 15 minutes) but only to be greeted by the same message again. So I downloaded a new setup of iTunes (97 MB :( ). Uninstalled the earlier version (9.0) and installed 9.1. Even that didn’t work. For the next 2 days I kept installing and re-installing iTunes hoping that Apple Mobile Device Helper (‘Helper’ is the name of the service) would get installed this time. In those 2 days I also observed that Bounjour.exe was also not running and had actually been uninstalled from the system and iTunes was not installing it. So that’s 2 things that the iTunes setup was not installing.

And then the thing I fear almost everyday happened. I dolted. I switched of my iPod in hope that iTunes might recognise the iPod when it’s in the recovery mode. What’s recovery mode? Read on.

I have jailbreaked/broke my iPod using Blackra1n RC3. It’s a tethered jailbreak which means that every time I switch off my iPod I cannot switch it back on without connecting it to a PC and re-Jailbreaking it (takes 30 seconds). When the iPod has been switched off once and you try to start it again it does turn on but only in recovery mode. Nothing works and all you are shown is an iTunes/Apple logo and a USB cable.

I thought I might be able to connect it like this and then repair iTunes somehow. It backfired. iTunes refused to recognise, yet again. But this time I was screwed. Because no application/software anything that connects to an iPod/ iPhone can connect unless iTunes has been installed and works flawlessly. Blackra1n also refused to recognise my iPod and switch it on since iTunes was not recognising it. I was in fix. The owner of a non-working iTunes and a bricked iPod (almost). Since I don’t have another PC/Laptop the only way was to install windows again and re-install iTunes. I get tense and a headache starts when any of my devices stop working (even if I don’t need them).This time I was tensed as hell. I finally managed to switch it on using my neighbor’s computer. It took 2 hours because;

  1. His Mac had iTunes 7
  2. Had to download iTunes on his Windows system
  3. Some DLL files were missing in his system.

With that done my iPod worked fine but what about iTunes? I could have re-installed windows anytime but that could have resulted in me losing my library (it’s not much, just 700 odd songs named track 1; track 2;track3 and so on.. , 2 audio books and a couple of videos [I can see Vivek smiling there]) plus the drivers would have to be installed again, not to mention the softwares. And even after that there was a chance it might not work. Till that point I had read Apple’s shitty article on iPod not recognized in ‘My Computer’ and in iTunes for Windows at least a hundred times. With all done, I finally managed to repair my iTunes. Piece of cake it was. Took 10 minutes. Worked like a charm. How?! Read on.

The fix

Follow the steps below if iTunes is not installing (or not working) a particular service such as iTunesHelper.exe or AppleMobileDeviceService.exe or iPodService.exe or Bonjour or any other service or part of the program that iTunes is not installing even after repeated re-installations. Since single downloadable files for each service is not offered by Apple, we’ll extract them from the main file (iTunesSetup.exe). With this trick you can install the following parts of the software individually:

  1. AppleApplicationSupport.msi
  2. AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi
  3. AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
  4. Bonjour.msi
  5. MobileMe.msi
  6. QuickTime.msi
  7. SetupAdmin.exe
  8. iTunes.msi (47 MB only as opposed to 97 MB for the whole setup)

Suppose if QuickTime player is giving you some problems. Why re-install iTunes? Just install QuickTime again! [QuickTime is 25.5 MB as opposed to repairing/re-installing the whole iTunes (97 MB)]. The method is very easy;

  1. Make sure you have a setup of iTunes, version doesn’t matter but 9.0 is recommend.
  2. Right click on the setup and extract files as you would for any .Zip or .Rar file.
  3. Wait.
  4. It’s right there! Instead of one setup you have the liberty to install the part you want or which iTunes wasn’t installing earlier for some reason.

Now use the setup to install that one program which was giving you troubles. Like if the error was that “MobileDeviceSupport is not running/working/active” then install AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi .

I still wonder how I wasted so many days trying to fix iTunes when all I had to do was extract the setup!(Apple doesn’t say anything about this). The reason as to why the problem arose and why iTunes was not installing some parts are still unknown. Thanks iTunes for adding to my troubles and thanks Apple for confusing me with a useless article.

All over the internet people are just advising users to try re-installing iTunes and waste their times, I hope this post helps somebody.

I’ll be uploading all those 8 setups individually as a new post.

PS: I have now switched from Blackra1n to Spirit.

UPDATE: You can now download iTunes.msi, Sysadmin.exe, QuickTime.msi, MobileMe.msi, AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi, AppleApplicationSupport.msi, Bonjour.msi and AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi from an iTunes Setup from here.
