TOI's and Hindu 'talking' Volkswagen Advertisement; The Black audio box dissected #1

Probability says that you must have already seen the black audio box that came along with your newspaper yesterday ( September 21, 2010) and have heard the voice of a man talking about the Volkswagen Vento. This latest innovation in advertisement media done by DDB Mudra is being touted as the most innovative advertisement ever.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, I suggest you to get hold of yesterdays Times Of India (Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore) or The Hindu (in Chennai only) quickly, before people drain out battery of that thing. Flip through every page but slowly. Trust me, the more slowly you go, the better a surprise it will be for you.

Imagine my shock when my mom told me that there was some sound coming from the Emergency Light kept near the newspaper she was reading (power cut in my area). It was anything but logical. Totally preposterous! She flipped the last page of the newspaper and we heard a sound. She did it again and the sound followed yet again. She then flipped the full newspaper and then this happened:

This is perhaps the best ad ever. Also, being a little curious minded I dissected the audio box. It has a Photoresistor as Transducer whose resistance is inversely proportional to the light intensity it receives. So when that particular page on paper is closed it does not receive any light. When one opens the page, the audio box gets light which is followed by change in resistance that is fed to IC to get the awesome audible advertisement. IC technology has now become so cheap that I suppose they could afford this without any problems whatsoever.

Here are the pictures which I clicked after ripping apart the audio box from TOI’s Volkswagen Vento’s talking advertisement.

This is a video that I prepared telling what exactly is inside the black audio box. The video is small (and sucky) but does serve the purpose. 😉
