Comex yesterday released a Jailbreak called JailbreakMe. It is a browser based jailbreaking technique which works on any iPhone slash iPod slash iPad irrespective of their generation (2G 3G et al) and the version of firmware installed.

Spirit jailbreak which was released a few months back proved that it was by far the most easiest and effective way of jailbreaking any iDevice regardless of the generation of the iDevice though it required you to have a PC/Mac and firmware 3.1.2/3.1.3 installed. JailbreakMe 2.0 on the other hand though will jailbreak all firmwares between 3.1.2-iOS 4. JailreakMe is browser based and thus eliminates the need of a Computer while Jailbreaking. JailbreakMe 2.0 has made Spirit erstwhile. Using it is a piece of cake and works on the following iDevices:

Though JailbreakMe 2.0 can jailbreak iOS 4 it can also be used to jailbreak earlier firmwares (3.1.2/3.1.3/3.2). It is recommend that you update to iOS 4 before jailbreaking because of the countless number of features that iOS 4 provides the user.

How To

• Update to the latest version of iTunes i.e iTunes 9.2 . {download from here]

• It is highly recommend that you use JailbreakMe 2.0 with iOS 4 so update if you haven’t already. In case you don’t want to update to iOS 4 make sure that you have a firmware higher than or equal 3.1.2 . If your device is already jailbroken by any method other than JailbreakMe 2.0 then either restore or update your iDevice in order to remove the previous jailbreak.

• Backup your iDevice (Contacts, Calendars, Photos, Videos and Apps). iTunes does it automatically though some of us don’t bother to let the backup finish and cancel it right away.

• Sync your iDevice with iTunes, make sure it has atleast 60% charge before starting the process.

• Switch on your Wi-Fi–Open Safari Browser on the device (Opera or any other won’t work) and remove all history, clear cache and clear cookies by this method–Go to Settings>Safari > Clear History, Clear Cookies, Clear Cache and open the following website http://jailbreakme.com. It has not yet been tested by 3G so use Wi-Fi to be on the safer (and cheaper) side.

• Once opened you will be before a purple screen with a bar like that of “Slide To Unlock” but this time written with “Slide To Jailbreak“.

• JailbreakMe 2.0 will now download the required files onto the iDevice. Once the download is complete the jailbreaking process will start. Don’t act like a nincompoop and close the browser or do anything even close dolting. Fortunately (and surprisingly) I didn’t.

• It will take around 90 seconds for the download and 180 for the installation and jailbreaking. All will be done in under 5 minute.

JailbreakMe 2.0 has finished jailbreaking your device and has installed Cydia!

• Cydia will be there on the SpringBoard, waiting for you to start it!
