It happened while I was sleeping. Apple silently sent a mail to me about the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4G was officially announced on June 7, 2010 at WWDC 2010 by Steve Jobs himself. Interestingly it has been also been named Jony Ive after Jonathan Paul Ive. So for now, let’s call it Jony Ive. What follows is an exhaustive and extensive review of Jony Ive/iPhone 4.

Going under the hood, iPhone 4

Design

It’s the same we saw few weeks back after a drunken man forgot something somewhere. Jony Ive is 34% thinner than the iPhone 3GS (but 3 grams heavier). Jony Ive is 4.5 x 2.31 inches, and 0.37 inches thick. It weighs 137 grams. The stainless steel rim around the iPhone 4 looks stunning and acts as a part of the antenna for 3G and Wi-Fi. In theory, this will increase the reception abilities of the iPhone 4. Is it to compensate for the poor AT&T network?

Display

The display has been upgraded. Now it boasts of a Retina Display which is a 3.5-inch Multitouch screen(same as old one’s) but now has a resolution of 960 × 640 pixels or 329 pixels per inch as apposed 164 PPI in iPhone 3GS . Retina Display because it surpasses the number of pixels a human eye can process. It is an IPS (n Plane Switching) based display just like the iPad and also has an 800:1 contrast ratio. The display also has an oleophobic layer (oil +phobia= oil resistant). I personally wouldn’t have minded a 4.3 inch display.

The processor and battery

Powered by Apple’s A4 Processor which it shares with the iPad, Jony Ive is a beast (no pun intended). It has two low-power 128MB DDR SDRAM chips. Since it’s a SoC (System on Chip) the battery life has increased.

A better processor in this case has led to a bigger battery and to a longer lifetime. iPhone 4 has up to about 7 hours of 3G talk-time, 6 hours of 3G surfing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi and video, 40 hours of music and 300 hours of standby.

Camera(s)

So, finally we have two cameras on an iPhone or we can say, Jony Ive is definitely not a pirate as it he has two eyes (no eye-patch).

The iPhone 4 has 5x Digital zoom(No optical zoom)

The main camera

5 MP it is. It has an illuminated backside sensor in addition to a LED flash to get brighter photos videos in the dark. A new feature ‘Tap to Focus’ has also been incorporated. Apple did exactly what I thought they shouldn’t. They boasted about 5x digital zoom. To those unaware, digital zoom is shit. Never ever while buying a camera or a phone pay attention to it’s capabilities in the field of Digital zoom. Only optical zoom matters which the iPhone 4/ Jony Ive lacks. Thank god Apple didn’t proclaim it had 1x Optical Zoom. But wait, there’s more. Jony Ive can record HD videos at720p (1280 by 720) and also edit them right on the device if coupled with iMovie ($4.99 on the App Store). Then you can export the project in one of three sizes: Medium (640 by 360), Large (960 by 540), or HD (1280 by 720).

The front camera

The front camera is a simple camera with VGA resolution. This camera will be used with third-party applications as well as Apple’s own video conference solution called FaceTime.

Gyroscope

Gyroscope is a new feature which hasn’t been included in any other mobile phone till now lest the iPhone 4. We’ve all drunken beer through the accelerometer, haven’t we? Gyroscope is basically an improved accelerometer with sensitivity to Pitch roll and yaw. The Gyroscope+ accelerometer will give us a six axis motion-movement control.

Video Calling

Its fun, isn’t it? But no. Apple has kept one feature down its sleeves to make sure that people buy the iPhone 5/ <insert name of man>. It has a front camera so why can’t you Video Call? Apple has restricted video calls to only Wi-Fi. So no video calls via 3G. And on top of that, calls can only be made to other iPhone 4’s.

The SIM sot

It has a micro SIM slot. Unless you can cut that Airtel SIM of yours and risk breaking a few iPhone 4’s while trying to insert that thing there’s no use trying to get one shipped from the US to you. You won’t be able to use it. It’ll work on Airplane mode though. A micro SIM is basically a small sized SIM almost half the size of SIM we currently use India (and you thought it was too small?). It is backward compatible i.e. you can use a micro SIM in phones with slots for the older SIM but you won’t be able to use the older SIM in the iPhone 4 or the iPad. We will need to wait till Apple ties with any of the networks in India.

Two Microphones

It has two microphones. One at the lower end of the phone and one on top of it which will be used for Noise canceling.

The Operating System

The iOS4 will be its operating system. Nothing exclusive about this. Anyone owning an iPhone or iPod touch or iPad can upgrade to it once it’s available (3 days before Jony Ive’s release i.e. 21sy June). Loads of amazing features and an even more closed OS. This topic deserves an exclusive post just for itself (No, don’t expect).
